Emmanuel's Got Talent!
Patriotic Salute - May 1, 2008

Emmanuel has always had some talented individuals throughout its 43-year history, but for this year's Spring Musical Program our first-ever Emmanuel's Got Talent competition culminated with a flood of talent that left the packed house of more than 800 parents and friends wowed. The depth of talent displayed during the evening's performances had the audience leaping to its feet in applause throughout the night. Thirteen acts were performed in front of the appreciative and captivated audience, with acts ranging from ballet, tumbling and piano to ballads and bands.

The competitors survived open auditions and a semifinal competition that judges whittled down from fifty-one acts to the final thirteen. A panel of impartial judges was brought in with the unenviable task of judging these talented young people. The voting was close in both grade level competitions, reflective of the level of talent present on this memorable evening.

Third grade student Mary Bryant Charles sang a moving song called "Prince of Egypt" that was awarded the first place trophy in the grades 1-5 competition, while sixth grade pianist Emma Bell played a haunting and captivating version of "A Knight's Tale" to win the grades 6-12 award.

The evening's focus was a salute to our country's servicemen and women, both past and present. The opening flag ceremony featured our various armed forces and the pledges to both the American and Christian flags. After the talent competitors performed, the evening's message was one of appreciation for the sacrifices made by men and women for the freedom of our nation. Patriotic songs, a call for America to turn back to God, and a prayer of repentance and gratitude to the Lord were all part of this moving part of the evening. Third grade student Taylor Barefoot's stirring "God Bless the USA" was greeted by thunderous applause, and the grand finale saw the combined voices of the Lower School Choir and the near-capacity audience singing  "God Bless America".

The colors and pledges were presented by Mark Dionne, Liz Stroud, Elizabeth Leeth, Madison Polson, and Matthew Durfey
